Let Love Rule

Take it from the devil you know

Equality is the only way. And not because nobody wants to be the better half in a loving relationship.

Lesley-Ann Brandt as the demon Mazikeen in the TV show Lucifer

Everybody says they understand, but who really does? Time for some more telly. Ask me why I write about Doctor Who and I'll say it's a highly eductional show. Otherwise no comment. [1] My readers confess en masse they never grasped the true power of television untill they started reading this blog. Best relationship tool ever. TV that is. Like we say in Dutch: look further than your nose long is, AKA think!

Mazikeen as a dominatrix bounty hunter

So yes, there are lessons to be learned, crammed in a simple [former] kid's show. About life, kink police rhinos in disguise (the Judoon), natural dominance, femdom and more. Rather than discuss the ongoing high-speed train wreck that is Doctor Who, let's turn our attention elsewhere. How about the devil? No - and yes - apparently our least favourite Timelord is going to battle Satan later this series - but wrong show. Lucifer not only lands on earth but more importantly, Netflix. If you're British, no it's not Miranda's boyfriend, it's just an actor. And yes, Miranda was on Doctor Who a long time ago, pretend-acting she was Donna, don't get overexcited. Meanwhile the devil is fed up with his job and moves to our blue marble [3] to open a nightclub with his most trusted sidekick, a demon lady with a degree in hellish torture called Mazikeen. Not a fantastic show, but convienient for TV dinners. Over the last 11 pizza's I've learned that Lucifer loves Maze and she loves him but for some reason [inapt scriptwriters?] both of them are utter dimwits when it comes to feeling what you feel. Wreaking havoc suits them better. May I suggest demonic couple therapy?

Mazikeen a demon? Who cares? The devil was once an angel.

Lucifer feels like a combination of several recent procedurals. In Castle a mystery writer pairs up with a detective. There's also a hint of Elementary, where Holmes is based in New York as a modern day super detective. And no, Irene Adler is still missing. Good thing they found xxx and yyy available to stand in. Also there is Forever, a short-lived show where an immortal (don't ask, boring) teams up, again, with a female detective. You get my drift.

Turns out Lucifer loves the detective and she loves him. Or did his dad plan this because he isn't allowed to be with the one his heart truly desires? Halfway season three [it's where I am now] their love still stands a chance. Detective lady doesn't know about his superpowers yet. And him? He's just a fool in love. Now imagine they end up as a couple - deeply in love and yabayabayaba - but do they stand a chance? No, at least not like this. True lust happens to anyone. Trust me, I'm good at it. Meanwhile true love only stand a chance if it is between equals, despite the fact their names are occassionally written as demon and human [translated: mistress and slave]. There's a difference between loving your pet dog [2] and your spouse, sibling or child. It's just not the same. So what have we learned today? When a woman loves a man, she loves him, not his inner slave. Please take note guys.

Mwah, who cares? The question is what I've learned. Hold on to your pants. Big surprise but Dutch finally rerealizes he loves women. Some more than others, sorry. In leather pants. Or without. Oops, sorry, did I write that out loud? Still it's true, Dutch love women and some more than others. Like we all do.

And no, it definitely doesn't hurt that Lesley-Ann Brandt plays demon Mazikeen. Most of the time she dazzles around in indecent outfits. Lucifer's words, not mine. What's the world coming to if even the devil stops being honest about his likes and dislikes. Meanwhile hooray for love (always) and leather (always welcome, OK almost always). I'll leave you with a final thought. Did Lucifer create the Leather Goddesses of Phobos? More on that later.

Just remember kids: TV is not evil, evil thoughts are. Love is good and a little leather never hurts. Ouch. My bad.

[1] On the other hand, ask me about love... How much time do you have?

[2] No Greenpeace, back down. You too Tiger King.

[3] It's November, I think it's safe to use those words again.
