According to Reddit, the caption reads: "a man begging for his wife's forgiveness inside Divorce Court. Chicago, 1948." Nobody really knows what's going on, but given the year it probably was the conclusion to years of suffering.
An uncontested divorce means you just don't want to be married to your spouse anymore, that simple. Until the concept was introduced in California in 1969, not good enough. Getting a divorce was near impossible. He took out his belt when he came home and beat you? Not sufficient grounds. Suffer on. Next please! No money to buy food? Same answer. Emotional abuse? Huh, what's that?
Pretty much the only reason for divorce was infidelity. One woman famously commented how she liked [other people's] divorces: good for business. As a paid adulteress she loved getting "caught" on camera with men. That's pretty sad. Not that life after divorce meant the gates of heaven swung open in an inviting embrace, especially not for women. Most people shunned divorcées like a disease.
One can be forgiven for not realizing just how difficult divorce was back then. Misreading body language on the other hand is a choice.
