Latex Makes You Feel Like a Superwoman

Most of the time, the BBC is more miss than hit. They surely failed when they asked Jody Whittaker to play the first female Timelord and not Janet Jackson. It certainly would've been an upgrade for the show with the first Timegoddess ever. Luckily the editorial staff of their website does a better job scouting news.

Agreed, the title is very much a BBC bore, but "From fetish to fashion: The rise of latex" makes for an interesting read. Like my own title much better. New York-based latex designer The Baroness: “...natural rubber latex is completely vegan and sustainable”. Apart from the fact of course that you have to make trees cry in order to produce latex and that latex is a luxury item in a world where even Marie Condo cannot convince the average person that they already have enough clothes to last them a lifetime. 

Japanese designer Atsuko Kudo comes up with better arguments. "As soon as I tried it on I felt like superwoman." Could've told you that. Sometimes you gotta ask a guy. The entertainment industry has taken notice and the article shows a famous picture of Lady Gaga meeting the British queen in a red Atsuko Kudo latex dress. The same picture has been selected by the Queen to hang in her Diamond Jubilee celebration gallery in Windsor Castle.

Without a hint of irony the BBC article continues to notice how "during the industrial revolution, latex became a hugely valuable colonial resource. To tap these vast reserves, horrifically violent techniques were imposed on forced labourers in the Brazilian Amazon and King Leopold’s Congo, where failure to meet impossible quotas was punished with mutilation and sometimes death." And of course the next paragraph is labeled "Sex and Power."

It's still a good article, I never knew latex was already in use in Central America around 1600 BCE or that the fetish magazine Atomage actually means is written AtomAge as in atom age. The article concludes stating that latex still has the ability to shock despite the fact it's no longer taboo.
