To be honest, I never believed they were "our" girls in the first place. Then again, nobody ever did, albeit for different reasons. A classic tale about climbing the Mount Everest has it that the first people to conquer it, ran into Coca Cola paraphernalia at various hights on their way to the top. After a successful return to base, they were puzzled, conveniently ignoring the fact the being the first high profile Westerner to climb the mountain is not the same as the first person - i.e. local - to conquer it.
Something similar - and just as bad - has happened to "our girls" Despite the fact that Nigeria is the single biggest country and largest economy on the African continent, more often than not people pay little attention to it. Dutch has travelled extensively and hopes to visit the country in the near future. Just not right now. To sum it up in two sentences. Those who are in power are bad people. Boko Harem - an Islamic sect - is just as bad. That's why.
With nothing to win by pressuring the current Nigerian administration into rescuing over 200 young girls that were taken against their will, most politicians around the globe, conveniently forget all about it. If nobody cares about it, it can only harm your re-election, right?
On April 14, 2014 Boko Harem abducted 276 schoolgirls. Of those girls, 57 escaped the same day and one two years after. The others, 218 remain in captivity ever since. Mind you, their ordeal goes way beyond being away from home. Just google "Isis sex slaves". It's bad.
From the safety of our homes, there is little we can do. Or is it? Awareness is always the first step.
Bring back our girls!
