Britain's Anti-Porn Laws One Year On: It's Ugly

Twelve months later, The Independent runs a story on the 2014 British Porn Laws. And yes it is bad. Censorship always is. But so is the slow demise of individual freedom that creeps up on us. Censorship is never the answer.

What everyone feared would happen, did happen. Of course. As if anyone ever doubted it!  One year on, Britain's Obscenity Act drove some out of business and others overseas. But did it save anyone from harm? Most likely not. So much for a tolerant and liberal society.

Censorship is the problem

The problem with censorship - as always - is  how to be objective. We all have our preferences, which makes it impossible to stay neutral. Politicians - a class that exemplifies the zenith of personal preference over common sense - try to sell us their picture perfect utopia of what the world ought to look like if only more laws were the solution. The majority of our kinda democratically choosen overlords don't care for us, all they want is to remain part of the ruling class. Others try to remake the world according to their preferences. In the meantime, nobody is any safer. After all, illusions never kept ordinary people from harm and those BDSM practitioners who mean well - and pose no danger to society - are the ones who get hurt when politicians sell their next batch of illusions to the electorate.

Meanwhile those laws not only introduced random censorship. Yes I know censorship by itself has that quality. It also destroyed business. What politician doesn't dream of the power of censorship and mind control anyway?

No-one is any safer

Even more importantly those laws have done nothing to protect anyone, let alone stop dangerous predators. Congratulations Mr. Prime Minister: your actions have made Britain - yes that includes everyone who ever paid or will pay taxes - less safe. Let me ask you: who poseses the greater danger? Is it a few predators hiding amongst us or a class of people who consider themselves demi-gods for no good reason? And no, I am not talking about some desperate domme who confuses her sexual preferences for real world dominance or strength of character.

This rant is inspired by an article in The Independent, where you can read more about the negative effects of last year's UK porn laws on Britain's kink scene and our freedom.
